How VA Combined Ratings Work
The "Whole Person" Concept
VA uses a "whole person" theory. If you're 30% disabled, you're considered 70% able-bodied. Each additional disability is calculated from the remaining able-bodied percentage, not added directly.
Example Calculation
If you have:
- 30% disability for back condition
- 20% disability for knee condition
The calculation is:
- Start with 30% (you're 70% able-bodied)
- Take 20% of the remaining 70% = 14%
- Add: 30% + 14% = 44%
- Round to nearest 10% = 40% combined rating
Bilateral Factor
When disabilities affect both sides of the body (both knees, both shoulders, etc.), VA adds a 10% bilateral factor. This is calculated before rounding.
Important Notes
- Individual ratings can only go up to 100%
- Combined ratings are rounded to the nearest 10%
- The bilateral factor only applies to paired body parts
- This calculator provides estimates — final ratings are determined by VA
